Short animation films, I made …
2014 <Stand-alone Island> / HD / 4’ 20” / color / Painting on Glass
Stand Alone Island
I made this animation film on Jeju Island, Korea in 2014, painted on glass. The story grew from the image of horses—roadkill in Jeju—something that stayed with me. It also came from my thoughts about living an independent life, as part of my nature.
2012 <The Green Moon> / HD / 5’ 37” / color
Green Moon
I made this film in 2012, assembling still images like stop-motion fragments. In a field in Nebraska, I watched the horizon, hearing the wind whisper, feeling air move through my unrestrained dance.
2008 < The Hollow > / HD / 6‘ 16“ / color / Painting on Glass
The Hollow
I made this animation film in 2009. It is painted on glass. The story was inspired by my father’s childhood—he was separated from his family during the Korean War in 1950. I can only imagine the difficult circumstances he endured at that time. It becomes an imagined survival story, where he meets a boar in a cave, almost like a delusion necessary for staying alive.
I have tried to understand my father’s character, because his sorrow and loneliness have deeply shaped my own life. Through this process, I began to feel his agony more closely—not only as something inherited, but also as something shared.
2008 < Green Waves > / 35mm / 1‘ 30“ / color
Green Waves
I made this animation film in 2008. I used charcoal on paper and created a sequence of images, photographing them with 35mm film in the darkroom. It is a one-minute film.
Try to feel the weight of the woman’s emotion after her farewell. Through the music, the meaning of “Green Waves” may become clearer.
1999 < Island > / DV / 4' 20" / color
Island
This is my animation film from 1999. I used materials such as Indian ink on Korean traditional paper to express the image of an “Island.”
For me, the island is not isolated—it suggests connection, like a body linked together, where we perceive only traces or symbols of those links. If you look closely at the tiptoes, you can feel the movement of waves surrounding the island.
